Onyx
Onyx is a beautiful natural stone prized for its rarity, unique design possibilities and swirling patterns. A calcareous stone, onyx is formed when limestone is dissolved and redeposited. It is a popular choice for walls, furniture and vanity tops and has been in use historically for carvings and jewellery. Today, its appeal lies in its aesthetic properties that are unmatched by any other natural stone on the market.
Appearance
Onyx comes available in soft pastel colours and rich, deep reds and browns, with a variety of different patterns and designs – every single slab is entirely unique. The typical finish for onyx is polish, which gives a smooth, slippery and reflective surface.
Maintenance
As a calcium based stone, onyx reacts with acidic materials like fruit juice, vinegar and wines. If it comes in contact with these liquids it may etch. To prevent this, onyx needs to be sealed. A fluorocarbon alphatic resin sealer is recommended, which will not evaporate or deteriorate like silicon sealers do. To prevent etching, use a non-acidic cleaner for wiping the surface. As a softer stone, onyx can be scratched and it is best to use cutting boards, placemats and heat pads to prevent contact with rough, heavy materials that can leave a mark.

Properties
The most remarkable thing about onyx is that it is translucent, meaning light is transmitted through the material. For this reason, onyx is often times backlit, creating a beautiful glow that shines through the stone and highlights its patterns. It is a beautiful and rare design element when used as a countertop, backsplash or wall piece. The rarity of onyx and these unusual properties are astonishing and are what makes onyx so sought after. Compared to other natural stones, onyx is relatively soft and requires more maintenance. Usually, onyx slabs have a fiberglass mesh material on the back surface of the stone to provide support.
Luxury Appearance & Visual Depth
Onyx is prized for its dramatic colour, natural patterning, and distinctive visual depth. It creates a high-end statement surface that immediately draws attention, especially in contemporary or luxury interiors. Each piece is unique, with striking natural movement and layered tones.
Care & Durability Considerations
Onyx is softer than granite or quartzite and can scratch or etch more easily in daily use. It requires thoughtful care and is best suited for areas where heavy wear is limited. When used in the right application, its visual impact can be unmatched.
Best Applications
Onyx is ideal for feature walls, bar fronts, fireplace surrounds, and custom accent pieces. It is also well known for backlit installations, where the stone’s natural translucency becomes a design focal point. For clients seeking a truly distinctive surface, onyx delivers a premium look.
