COUNTERTOPS

Quartzite

Quartzite, for many reasons, is the material of choice for many kitchen and home renovations. As a metamorphic rock, quartzite is a natural stone created during heating and compression of sand in the earth’s crust. It is valued for its aesthetic similarity to marble, but greater durability which can withstand the wear and tear of daily kitchen use as a countertop. Most commonly found in lighter colours, quartzite adds a touch of elegance and timeless charm to any interior.

Appearance

Light coloured quartzite is coveted for its similarity to marble, which contains little dark spots or none at all in shades of white, beige and gray. Other shades depend on the amount of minerals in the rock, such as iron oxide, resulting in green, blue, brown, yellow and pink colours. There may also be streaks running throughout the material created during the formation process by varying pressure. Often times a resin is applied to give the surface a smooth, glossy finish, and to compensate for gaps and fissures. Other common finishes for quartzite are a honed finish, which gives a matte look and satin feel, or a leather finish, which gives texture to the surface.

Maintenance

Since quartzite is a natural stone, it is porous and requires maintenance. Although it is more dense and less porous than other materials, it can still be vulnerable to spills and staining. For this reason, quartzite needs to be sealed upon installation, and then resealed once or twice a year to maintain a protective coating that will prevent staining of the surface. Regardless, spills should be wiped away immediately in case the sealant has worn thin. Abrasive cleaners should be avoided because they can strip the sealant and leave the surface vulnerable. Instead, use a pH balanced cleaner and a soft cloth for cleaning to prevent the finish from damage. Quartzite can resist heat well, and is very hard making it less prone to denting and chipping compared to other stones. The surface, however, can still be scratched by sharp objects, so a cutting board is recommended for activities like cooking.

Installation & Properties

Handling a material like quartzite requires professional expertise in installation. For a hassle free countertop installation, contact the Crown Marble team for a precise and accurate job that is done right on the first try.

Quartzite is one of the most dense and tough natural stones, being even harder and more durable than granite. For this reason it handles exposure to heat well, and can resist scratches better than softer materials. Although quartz is porous like all natural rock it is less so due to its high density, making it more resistant to absorbing spills and staining.

Premium Aesthetic

Quartzite often features dramatic veining and movement similar to marble, but with stronger overall performance. It is popular for statement islands and feature countertops where natural variation is a key part of the design. For many projects, quartzite is chosen as a luxury upgrade with long-term value.

Strength & Everyday Performance

Quartzite is a natural stone valued for its hardness and durability, often performing exceptionally well in busy kitchens. It offers strong resistance to scratching and everyday wear while delivering a premium natural look. Many homeowners choose quartzite when they want natural stone without the softness of marble.

Maintenance & Protection

Quartzite typically benefits from sealing to help protect against staining, especially around oils, wine, and cooking spills. With proper sealing and routine care, it performs reliably and maintains its appearance over time. It offers a strong balance of natural beauty and practical durability.
